Sewing a tablecloth – tips and tricks

Dress your dining room in a DIY tablecloth. With the fall season progressing in full swing, with the holidays approaching soon, there are many ways to dress your table. Sewing a tablecloth is not difficult, but it’s great fun! A tablecloth that reflects the spirit of the season adds a special touch to any dining table and making a DIY tablecloth is one of the easiest sewing jobs that you could tackle.
Before you begin, first make sure that the tablecloth exactly matches your table, tableware or room and that it corresponds to the occasion. The key is to get the measurements right and give the edges a clean, professional-looking finish.

How to sew a tablecloth
1. Choose the right fabric
The first most important step is to choose a fabric suitable for a tablecloth. Most tables require a material that is relatively wide, so look for a fabric that is at least 54 inches wide.
As tablecloths easily get food stains, choose a fabric that is machine washable and can be dried. The cotton is the best choice, but tends to get a lot of wrinkles, so consider cotton blends or fabrics that have been treated to resist wrinkles. A cotton-polyester blend is particularly good.

2. Measure the table
To measure the table exactly would be the next step. This determines the size and shape of the tablecloth and the required amount of fabric. Well-made tablecloths are those in which the blanket overhang covers the entire table and hangs directly over (and not on) the chair seats.

How to measure a square or rectangle table is:
Measure the width and length of the table surface.
Then determine the amount of blanket overhang you desire. For an informal tablecloth, an overhang of 12 inches or less is sufficient. The drop should come just above the seat cushion. The tablecloth should not fall on the chair seats.
For a formal tablecloth, the drop can reach down to the ground. The floor-length tablecloths should hang 1 inch above the ground. In that case you will probably need fabric panels that need to be sewn together along the tablecloth.
To add the width measurement add 2 drops per drop plus 2 inches for the hem finish and 2 inches for seam allowances if you still need to assemble different pieces of fabric together.
For the length, add 2 drops, the length measurement of the table plus 2 inches for the hem finish.
How to measure a round table:
For a round table, measure the diameter of the surface.
Add 2 times the desired drop measurement.
In addition there are 2 more inches for the rolled seam and another 2 inches for seam allowances, if additional pieces still have to be sewn together. The diameter of this measurement is the required run length.

3. Add plates (if necessary)
Although making a tablecloth is a fairly straightforward process, the tables come in a variety of sizes and shapes. If additional pieces of fabric have to be sewn on, you should pay attention to exactly where they are coming from.
If the fabric pieces are needed for a sufficient width, there are a few things to keep in mind …

Since a seam in the middle of the tablecloth looks pretty ugly, try adding the pieces of fabric to the sides of the fabric. The two side walls should be the same width.

The width of the cover fabric will help you easily determine where to place the sidewalls. If possible, try positioning the longitudinal seams along the edge of the table rather than on the surface of the table for a good-looking tablecloth. This is especially helpful if you have chosen a monochrome fabric.
For a printed or checkered fabric, make less conspicuous seams, but try to work so that the patterns fit exactly along the seam lines.
For printed or checkered material that needs to be sewn together, always add the sample measurement times 2 if you still need to sew additional pieces of fabric. So you will be sure that the pattern will be exactly matched along the seam lines.
